  • I'm engaged (The story)... about four months late

I think it's about time I updated, and I thought telling you about how I asked Jess to marry me would be a good way to update. So, here goes.

Jess was working at a resort called Madden's right outside of Brainerd, Minn for the summer, and I was working at Grindstone Lake Bible Camp and had to pass through Brainerd to get there so I visited Jess on the way through. We had had a wonderful time hanging out, and I had known I wanted to propose, so I asked her if we could go for a walk on the beach and talk there. She agreed that that would be fun, so we went down to the beach. I had a list of questions prepared that asked things about her that I didn't know some were silly (ie. Have you always liked being left handed?) and others were really deep (ie. What is your favorite thing about our relationsip?) Basically, I knew Jess would appreciate me taking time to show that I was interested in knowing more about her and what she liked (plus it's totally something she would do). We both answered the questions. Then I said that I had one final question; I got down on one knee in the sand and asked her to marry me. At first Jess was like "Is this for real?" but after seeing that I had the ring out she said "Of course I'll marry you!" She was smiling and all happy and stuff (and of course I was too).

And so basically that's how that happened, and now we are planning for our wedding which will likely take place next July or Aug. and I'm so excited to plan for our marriage. I just hope to continue to keep God in the front of our relationship.

Anyway, I hope that told the story

  • César Chávez! A real American Hero!

So, I recently found a new hero (besides Jesus of course). César Chávez!

This is going to be a weird blog because I basically want to talk about all that Chávez did:

Chávez is essentially what Martin Luther King Jr. was to black civil rights, to Mexican farm workers civil rights. He founded the NFWA (now the UFWA) which worked to gain better rights for workers in California's farms. He was a strong proponent of non-violence and lead and organized many strikes, walkoffs and protest marches. Additionally, he was persecuted heavily for his involvement in union activities. The California growers had him imprisoned for advocating a boycott against Bud Antle, Inc, a major grape producer in the region. As he was taken into custody he cried to his fellow supporters “Boycott the hell out of them!”

Chávez can be an inspiration to all of us, his never give up attitude and selflessness are testiments to human will and determination. After many strikes, boycotts, and protests, the NFWA made progress getting more strickt legislation for farmers employing migrant workers. He shows that willpower, determination, and teamwork can overcome adversity.

César Chávez is my new personal hero, and I hope other people learn as much from him as I did

  • Over coals and hot ash I stand

Over coals and hot ash I stand,
    Mightiest of all men!

    My allies rush to assist,
The smell of burnt flesh doth attract.

As fires and coals burn themselves out,
    We fight on,
Through ranks of metal clad soldiers,
And rows of little bits of gold.

    Smearing blood on our bread,
We partake of the celebration feast.

    The battle won,
    We douse the flames.

    EDIT:

I decided I better tell people that this poem is about grilling.

  • Finals, papers, and explications

No, I didn't say expletives as much as I may have wanted to.

I am completely finished with three of my six classes. I have three papers a presentation and a super long test yet to look forward to. I cannot wait till it is done.

On a completely random side note: Have any of you seen the commercial with the "Subaru Heaven"? I just recently saw it. I think it's new, but it made me laugh. Then I wondered if there was an Oldsmobile Heaven. I totally want my Olds to go to heaven. I mean I've got nearly 200 thousand miles on it, so it's got a while before I'll have to trash it... But I'd be really sad to just send it to a scrapyard.

    Here's the commercial fyi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE2Vcaprfbs

Anyways, I should probably stop watching TV and get to work on these papers.

Second random side note: I'm having a grillout for my floor in the Snarr Courtyard tomorrow. I'm pretty excited about that. If live on Third South Snarr, you should be there, if not, well I'm sorry...

  • Collective conciousness

The wrong key for the door

By Timothy Stulken and his Advanced Comp class

As the sun rises, I close my eyes.

A brassy door knob grins at me with blue and filed teeth,

The wrong key to the door.

The weird thing is that your mom told me,

I am a monkey hanging from the tallest branch.

    The cigarette shrinks as,

Kenworth sprouts wings and Flies across the Prairie.

The dog’s ear twitches under its master’s hand.

The coming storm chases away the sun,

And the infant, fat-legged, stands in the rain puddle,

A fresh carrot, caked in mud.

My grandma slips on the wet sidewalk.

This was an activity we did in class called an "extravagant corpse." It is a parlor game invented in the 30's. Each person writes a small portion to create a larger poem.
